The year started so well. 

By the middle of July, I’d read 100 books. That’s a lot of books. I attribute this to how much time I was spending commuting to uni – at least eight hours a week by train, often more than that. Ahh, back in the day when I was young and fully of energy and didn’t use my hour-long train ride to sleep and/or glare at people who were talking in the quiet carriage.

But in the past few weeks, I’m struggling to find the motivation to read, and not really enjoying the books I do read. 

So I’ve come up with a few things to get me out of this slump, and I hope that maybe you guys will find them useful as well!

For me, this is pretty simple…

Harry Potter, of course. I’ve also read We Are Okay by Nina LaCour twice this year, because I loved it so much. With rereading, you know you already love it. There’s no risk there, and sometimes the familiarity is helpful to get back in the groove. 


Maybe the reason for your slump is reading about too many love triangles. Or too many dragons.*

Sometimes I’ve found that reading something I wouldn’t normally read, like sci-fi or (god forbid) an ADULT book, is a good way to get out of a slump. I realise this is totally contradictory advice from my previous point. Bear with me. 

Goodreads can be kind of like that kid who’s always daring people to do things. Read two hundred books this year? That’s great! Read one? That’s great, too! Don’t put pressure on yourself to reach the goal you’ve set yourself. Circumstances change and if you make it about reaching that end-point, you’ll lose sight of why you love it in the first place. 

Back in year twelve, I used to be really disciplined, and I’d actually have a whole TWO HOURS of the day where I wasn’t allowed to use my phone. 

I want to try doing that again. It works wonders for productivity, and it means that you can enjoy a book without constantly getting distracted by Buzzfeed quizzes and/or Twitter. Because believe me, this blog post would have already been finished if not for my Twitter addiction. 

By the end of the week you’ll be reading the backs of cereal boxes, believe me. Whatever happens, however long your slump lasts, it won’t be forever. And when you’re ready to dive back into some wondrous worlds, the books will be there waiting.
